Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales and have one of the widest global distributions of any marine mammal species. They are found in all deep oceans, from the equator to the edge of the pack ice in the Arctic and Antarctic. They are named after the waxy substance, spermaceti, found in their heads.
The inspiration for the white whale of Moby Dick, sperm whales have the largest heads, biggest brains, and make the loudest sound of any animal on Earth. Region: Arctic. Destinations: Lofoten, Greenland, Svalbard, Iceland.
The sperm whale received its name from an organ inside its head—the spermaceti organ—that old-time whalers used to believe produced sperm. Instead, the spermaceti organ contains high quality oil. Sperm whales are very difficult to study because they spend most of their time in open water, away from coastlines.
Sperm whalePhyseter catodonalso called cachalotthe largest of the toothed whaleseasily recognized by its enormous square head and narrow lower jaw. The sperm whale is dark blue-gray or brownish, with white patches on the belly. It is thickset and has small paddlelike flippers and a series of rounded humps on its back.
They also have the largest brain out of any animal known to exist. Female sperm whales on the other hand tend to be much smaller growing to lengths of 34 — 38 ft. The head of the whale contains an organ known as the spermaceti organ, hence its name, which was once believed to produce sperm, but has since been proven to serve another unknown use.
It is the only living member of the genus Physeter and one of three extant species in the sperm whale familyalong with the pygmy sperm whale and dwarf sperm whale of the genus Kogia. The sperm whale is a pelagic mammal with a worldwide range, and will migrate seasonally for feeding and breeding. The females cooperate to protect and nurse their young.
They possess the largest brain in the animal kingdom and spend much of their lives in the light-starved depths of the oceans hunting prey. The mighty sperm whales look nothing like any other whale. For a start, they each have an enormous square-shaped head which accounts for around a third of their body length.
Jump to navigation. Unlike the baleen whales, sperm whales are active predators, specializing on large squids in the deep sea but also eating large bony fishes and sharks. Sperm whales have several specialized physical characteristics that aid in this predatory behavior.
The sperm whale is the largest toothed whale. Males reach 60 feet 17 m in length and the smaller females are 37 feet 12 m. They are dark gray in color, have a hump rather than a dorsal fin, and usually display their tail flukes when they dive.
The sperm whale is the largest toothed whale and the most sexually dimorphic whale. Sperm whales are found in all oceans of the world, but they are concentrated in areas of high productive and deep water. Males and females have quite different distributions. The most characteristic feature of this whale is its huge, blunt head that makes up the front third of the body.
