For five weeks, beginning with the last week of May, the mouth of the Merrimac River in Newburyport, MA is the easiest place to catch a keeper Striper that I've ever fished. It is the northern tip of the seven mile stretch of Plum Island and the locals just call it "The Point". The structure created by a sandbar, combined with fast moving water and the magic of fresh water meeting the ocean, creates a fantastic feeding spot for hungry, migrating Stripers.
All the best fisherman that I know are not very patient. I am not very good at waiting, especially waiting for the Stripers to show up. So I have a few choices; I can run south and fish, I will try, but its hard to find the time.
Its where I learned to saltwater fish and likely still where I fish more than anywhere else in a given season. Its well known, has great public access and the fishing is very good. These factors mean that it also can be very, very crowded. Just yesterday I was fishing in the river and stopped casting to allow a fellow room to fight a fish, he was so pleased and surprised that he offered me a plug when he landed the fish.
This will be the final Fish Finder of the year, but I will be following the migration. During the Sunday articles I will do my best to give you breaking news. This has been a very exciting summer and the fall migration looks to be even better.
The beach cleanup crews with Delaware Surf Fishing have been collecting a lot of trash on Sundays. Anyone is welcome to join and help. We can make a difference with enough effort.
Summer is in full swing! The weekends have been crowded, but if you know how to fish the crowds, you can do well. The easiest and best time is to fish when everyone else is still asleep.
Nice fall day to fish and the boat only had about 20 people vs a big summer crowd. Caught plenty We've taken the 2-hour striped bass fishing trip two times now and really enjoy it.
Striped bass roam around the diverse shores of Plum Island typically from April through October and our Captain Mark's striped bass charters are typically best within this time frame. Spring and fall are often best for light tackle fishing for striped bass and they can be caught anywhere from the backwater marsh estuaries to the copper and white colored sands of our local beaches. Stripers are constantly on the prowl for the easiest prey that they can find.
