Kitaab is seeking short story submissions for The Best Asian Short Stories anthology, the latest in the annual TBASS series of anthologies which aims to celebrate the Asian short story as a constantly evolving, innovative and vibrant mode of literary expression. The focus of our issue is experimentation and we are looking for well-crafted stories that employ innovative narrative styles and writing techniques, take a multifaceted approach to their themes, encourage the reader to actively engage in re imagining the story, and seek to expand the boundaries of the short story genre. We know that Asia speaks a diverse set of languages that express themselves in unique ways and endeavor to represent this linguistic and expressive diversity by encouraging the submission of translations from Asian languages into English.

A father compelled to offer his accomplished but dark-skinned daughter in marriage to a stranger. An urban man forced to sacrifice who he is to become an alpha male. These are very different stories, told by authors with different styles, from homes across Asia. But each draws us in, inviting us to consider new perspectives, explore unique narratives, and escape momentarily into a different world.
A son worries whether his mother, who is travelling alone, will be able to haul her luggage down from the conveyor belt. An elderly couple from Karachi holds hands for the first time in broad daylight when crossing the road together in Atlanta. Distinctly familiar and relatable moments such as these are exhilarating to find in any book, and the Best Asian Short Stories contains many.
The cover of the short story anthology titled, The Best Asian Short Stories brings to mind the long running and prestigious yearly anthology, The Best American Short Stories and by association of its content, the O Henry Prize collection. As one with an avid interest in short stories, as a writer and reader, the collection from Asian writers was cause for much anticipation for me. While the process of selection of stories in the Asian format was quite different from that of The Best American Short Stories, the new anthology comes with the uniqueness of containing narratives from varied countries in Asia.
By this I mean which events or ongoing developments shaped a country or the South Asian region, or had an outsized effect on the world. This year, a number of stories from the region drew global headlines, including from countries that do not always make front page news. Here are my top ten South Asia stories of the year:.
Through the pages of these volumes, you get a glimpse of what the respective societies in Asia are going through. The edition is the second in the series. Ultimately, 13 nations, including India, Malaysia, Japan and Singapore are represented in the final volume. Anjum has already lined up editors for the next two editions.
