Revelers at the Toronto Pride Parade in Last week, an anti-gay religious group disrupted Hamilton Prideleading to shouting and brawls. An anti-gay group appeared in the Village earlier this month, making hateful comments through a megaphone before police arrested the perpetrator for disturbing the peace.
Detroit police chief James Craig has said that the neo-Nazis who showed up at the city's Pride Parade on Sunday made chimpanzee noises towards African Americans as part of an attempt to incite violence, hoping to recreate the events of the infamous Charlottesville rally in At Charlottesville's "Unite the Right" rally, violent clashes broke out between white supremacist groups and counter-protesters. One white supremacist drove his car at speed into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing a woman and injuring others.
The video, published on Jun 12, further shows the woman in question being shoved to the ground while police stand by and making no attempt to intervene. Later in the video a young woman asks an officer why they are protecting the NSM members. At almost 9 minutes in length, the video shows what festival-goers were subjected to by the NSM members. The NSM members, numbering around 15 in total, were provided a police escort by the Detroit Police Department as they marched through the festival.
An armed group of self-described white supremacists have crashed Detroit Pride with the help of police escorts. The incident happened yesterday Saturday, 8 June. Photos and videos from the event show about ten NSM members dressed in black.
Hundreds of people were gathered at the Dupont Circle for the parade when people started running after hearing what they thought was a gunshot. In Detroitan armed white supremacist group called the National Socialist Movement NSM descended on the annual Motor City Pride Festival, where they held placards, gave Nazi salutes and displayed armbands with swastikas. Dressed in black with a number carrying firearms and shields, the NSM marchers tore apart pride flags and pushed over at least one counter-demonstrator.
Chief James Craig said Monday that five people among about 15 white supremacists were legally carrying firearms while they traded barbs with counter-protesters during the Motor City Pride festival in downtown Detroit. Craig says the department's intelligence sources indicated the group wanted to spark violence similar to the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Craig says officers kept the groups separate and no injuries occurred. He says members of both groups shouted racial epithets at each other and toward police officers in an attempt to bait them into a violent response.
